Beyond the 4 Cs: Why the 5th C Matters Most in Diamond Jewelry
Buying a natural diamond can feel scary. Most people look at the 4 Cs on a paper report: Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat. But did you know two diamonds can look exactly the same on paper, yet one looks full of life while the other looks completely dead?
So, I am Kamal Narola, founder of Jonga in Dubai. My family has been in diamond jewelry since 1989. We are the only diamond manufacturers in Dubai with complete in-house manufacturing from rough stone to finished diamond jewelry. Over the years, I have personally designed and made more than 400 jewelry pieces and consulted hundreds of people from different countries and cultures.
At Jonga, we believe the most important rule of buying a diamond is the 5th C: Consciousness.
The Truth About the 5th C
Consciousness means seeing the diamond with your own eyes, mind, and heart instead of relying only on a laboratory paper report. A grading paper only gives you technical numbers. It does not tell you if the diamond has life, spark, or soul.
When you buy jewelry, it is a form of communication. Jewelry should say what words cannot say. You cannot find that feeling on a printed chart.
What Usually Goes Wrong in the Market
Many diamond sellers focus only on paper specs. Stock-based selling often creates advice that serves the store's inventory first, not what is best for the buyer. People buy stones blindly, and they miss the small details that make a big difference in how the ring actually looks in the sun.
What to Check When Buying a Diamond
Instead of just looking at the paper, check these real-life details:
-
Look at the light: Ensure light bounces inside the stone and reflects straight back into your eyes.
-
Check the frame: There should be no bad gap between the stone and the metal frame holding it.
-
Feel the prongs: The prongs (the tiny metal claws holding the stone) must be smooth and even.
-
Look at the side stones: Side stones must support the center stone, not fight it.
| What the Paper Says | What Real Life Shows |
| Cut Grade | How the stone actually catches light in a normal room. |
| Clarity Grade | Whether the stone looks bright or cloudy to the naked eye. |
| Metal Purity | If the gold is fresh or reused, which affects long-term strength. |
How Jonga Thinks About Diamond Quality
Real craftsmanship goes beyond what people can see. At Jonga, we only use fresh gold. Reused gold can cause porosity, which means tiny holes or small cracks in the metal. Fresh gold gives a stronger, smoother finish.
We also pre-polish the gold before the diamond is set into it. This means the hidden metal under the stone is shiny. This lets light bounce off the polished gold beneath the stone, making the diamond look even more alive. We polish what no one sees, because hidden finishing still changes visible beauty.
